A first ride in Saigon

Excited, careful
and free to explore.

A short story about seeing Ho Chi Minh City differently—at a gentle speed, during quieter hours, with something new around every corner.

Saigon · First ride after the rush

Imagine Sam, a foreign visitor seeing Saigon for the first time. From the pavement, the flow of scooters looked fast and almost impossible to understand. Sitting on a scooter in this city felt exciting—but Sam was in no hurry to prove anything.

“I did not want to ride fast. I just wanted to feel comfortable and see where the city took me.”

The first few streets

After checking the helmet, mirrors, brakes and route, Sam began on a quiet side street at a slow, steady speed. The plan was simple: look ahead, keep a predictable line, leave plenty of space and let faster riders pass. Within a few blocks, the nervousness softened into a smile.

Moving slowly made the city more interesting. Sam noticed a tiny coffee shop behind a row of trees, an old apartment building glowing in the afternoon light, a neighbourhood market and food stalls that would have been easy to miss from a car.

Saigon after the busiest hours

Later, after the peak traffic had eased, the ride continued along well-lit roads beside the canal and through quieter local streets. Saigon felt different at night: cooler air, bright shop signs, late dinners and a new surprise around almost every corner.

There was no reason to hurry. The pleasure came from being able to stop for a drink, look down a side street and choose the next small destination. One turn led to a lively food stall; another opened onto a peaceful view of the city lights.

A small adventure to remember

By the time Sam returned, the first ride felt like much more than transportation. It was a happy, independent evening filled with places that had never appeared on the original plan. The best memory was not speed—it was feeling close to the city.
